Entering the protection of Non-Muslim
Shaykh Abd al-Hagq Turkmani was born in 1969 in Kirkuk, Iraq, where his father, Mulla Haggi ‘Ali Turkmani, served as a well-known imam and khatib. He pursued his early education at Thānawiyyah Islamiyyah in Kirkuk and later enrolled in the Faculty of Sharia at Baghdad University. Unfortunately, due to the challenging circumstances in Iraq at that time and health issues, he was unable to complete his formal studies. However, undeterred, he sought knowledge directly from traditional scholars in the classical way.
Among his esteemed teachers were prominent figures like Shaykh Muhammad Amin al-Zankanah (d. 1997), a Kurdish scholar, and hadith specialist Shaykh Hamdi b. ‘Abd al-Majid al-Salaf; al-Kurdi (d. 2012), and Subhi al-SamiraT al-Baghdadi (d. 2013). He also studied under Professor Dr. Bashär ‘Awad Ma’ruf, from whom he gained expertise in editing manuscripts. Furthermore, Shaykh Abd al-Hagq Turkmani received ijazat (certificates) in hadith from scholars, including Shaykh ‘Abd al-Ghafar b. Hasan al-Rahmani (d. 2007) of Pakistan.
In response to the deteriorating conditions in Iraq and ongoing health challenges, the Shaykh migrated to Turkey before settling in Sweden and later the United Kingdom. There, he established the Center for Studies in the Interpretation of Islam. The Shaykh actively participates in Islamic conferences worldwide, including in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and other places, maintaining strong connections with esteemed scholars in the Islamic world.
In 2010, Shaykh Abd al-Hagq Turkmani received the prestigious Naif Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud International Prize for his significant contribution to a research paper titled “Interaction with Non-Muslims According to the Prophetic Sunnah.” He authored the first part of the paper, encompassing 450 pages of topical hadiths and narrations with critical references and explanations. Besides numerous other books and research papers covering various Islamic subjects, the Shaykh has dedicated substantial efforts to publishing the entire corpus of the renowned Andalusian scholar Ibn Hazm al-Qurtubi (d. 1064). To date, he has published over seven critical editions of Ibn Hazm’s works. His relentless pursuit of knowledge and scholarly contributions have made him a respected figure in the field of Islamic studies.
